Active musician; member of Northwest Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Seattle, Brass Band Northwest, and Seattle Central College Jazz Orchestra

Pianos are made of many parts, but to me the most important parts are the strings, all 225 or so of them (different models have different numbers).  It's their vibration which is the fundamental source of the sound of the piano.  When I tune a piano, I'm tightening and loosening those strings to bring the pitch of the string up or down, whichever is needed.  Here's a link to an article about piano wire which recently appeared in a blog on Piano Price Point, a relatively new on-line publication about pianos you might enjoy.  The wire company mentioned is the one I use, Mapes Piano String Co.

Buying a Used Piano?

Thinking about buying a piano privately (like on Craig's List)?  Save yourself from the disappointment of a piano that's untunable or has expensive problems.  I'll do a purchase evaluation for $60. This could also apply to a used piano in a piano shop.  Save yourself some money/disappointment in the long run!

Neighborhood Discount

Piano technicians do not often offer discounts, but Bear Piano Services does: the Neighborhood Discount.  Two or more pianos tuned the same day in the same neighborhood qualify you for a $10 discount.  Call with dates that will work for you and your neighbors, and I will find a date that works for us all.
